2000 Development of monitoring programme and draft management plans for the Ramsar sites located on the Kamchatka peninsula.

Karaginsky Island is in the western part of the Bering Sea, at the northeastern coast of Kamchatka peninsula (the Koryak Autonomous Area, Karaginsky rayon). The distance from the rayon centre (Ossora village) is 55 km. Karaginsky Island with 2-km coastal zone is of great importance for conserving migratory birds and their habitats. The river mouth is an area of moulting of waterfowl; rocky terrains are grounds for bird colonies.
